Strategies for the Prevention and Management of Stress Urinary Incontinence in Childbearing and Community-Dwelling Older Women
This supplement focuses on the importance of early screening and intervention in women of childbearing age and older women. In the introduction, Carolyn M. Sampselle, PhD, RNC, and Thelma J. Wells, PhD, RN, discuss how clinicians are in an ideal position to educate women about stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and to suggest avoidance and treatment strategies. In the first article, Janis M. Miller, PhD, APRN, details the childbearing-related risks of SUI and gives evidence for the efficacy of preventive and management strategies during pregnancy and postpartum. In the next article, Sandra Engberg, PhD, RN, CRNP, explores the prevalence and risks of SUI in older women from the middle-aged to the frail elderly and addresses therapeutic options. In addition, Leslie S. Wooldridge, MSN, RNCS, GNP, provides a Clinician Response after each article and lists advantages and disadvantages of current treatment methods in a comprehensive appendix.
